If you are suffering from a severe toothache, you may have an infected root canal.
You will be glad to know that root canal treatment is safe, relatively painless, and can actually save your tooth and your smile.
Root canal treatment is used to repair and save a tooth that becomes infected. During this procedure, the nerve and pulp of the affected tooth are removed, and the inside is cleaned and sealed.
Some signs and symptoms that you may need to undergo root canal therapy include:
A root canal treatment is performed to repair a tooth with severe decay, damage or infection inside of the tooth. The “root canal” is the cavity inside the tooth structure. Within this area is the dental pulp, which contains nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissues. Normally, the inside of the tooth is protected by the hard enamel exterior, but when the enamel is damaged, bacteria can enter and cause infection. Without root canal treatment, the infection can become so severe that the tooth needs to be removed. During a root canal treatment, the infected pulp is removed through the top of the tooth. The canals are then cleaned out and filled with a rubber-like material. After your root canal treatment is complete, you will receive a dental crown to protect the tooth.
Many patients are concerned about the pain associated with a root canal treatment, but we will make sure that your mouth is numb throughout the procedure. Better yet, this treatment will relieve your mouth pain! If you are concerned about your comfort, be sure to ask our team about sedation dentistry options.
