If you have any symptoms of gum disease, it’s imperative that you see a qualified dentist as soon as possible.
At Smile Perfection Dental & Implant, we offer treatments to help you achieve healthy gums that can support your teeth for a lifetime.
Periodontics is the dental specialty focusing exclusively on the inflammatory disease that can destroy the gums and other supporting structures around the teeth. Left untreated, this condition can cause serious dental damage including tooth loss.
The first stage of periodontal disease is known as gingivitis. Gingivitis is characterized by inflamed, tender, bleeding gums, and plaque buildup.
The second stage is periodontitis. This stage is characterized by plaque hardening into calculus (tartar), gum recession, deepening gum pockets and early stages of bone loss.
The final stage of periodontal disease is advanced periodontitis. This stage is characterized by the destruction of gums, bone, and ligament tissues, loosening and loss of teeth, and more severe bone loss.
Periodontal disease is diagnosed through a series of tests. First, your dentist will check the depth of the gum pockets between your teeth and gums. Next, they will check for inflammation, bleeding, loose teeth, and bone loss. The findings from the test will determine the stage of periodontal disease and recommend treatment.
If you are in the early stages of gum disease, this treatment can help you regain oral health. This deep cleaning process has two elements. Scaling is the removal of plaque and tartar both above and below the gum line. Root planing is the smoothing of the tooth roots to prevent future buildups.
When gum disease occurs, the oral tissue becomes swollen, often causing a “gummy” smile. Dental crown lengthening fixes this issue by removing excess gum tissue and exposing more of the natural tooth.
When scaling and root planing isn’t enough, but the disease has not yet damaged the jaw bone, a gingivectomy can be used to remove and reshape loose, diseased gum tissue and eliminate pockets between the teeth and gums.
When the jaw bone deteriorates, bone grafting can be used to place artificial bone in areas of concern. This procedure is often used to create strong enough bone to support the installation of a dental implant.
